Namibia's Desert Oasis

The Helmeringhausen Hotel lies in the tiny settlement of Helmeringhausen in Southern Namibia. It was established during the German colonial era as a farm by a member (Mr Hubert Hester) of the Schutztruppe/German Colonial Infantry. Later it became famous for its Karakul sheep breeding and currently cattle and goats are farmed here. The Hotel forms part of the historic 11,000 ha Farm Helmeringhausen and is an ideal stop-over on the drive between Lüderitz and the Namib-Naukluft Park, Sossusvlei or Fish River Canyon.

Today the Hotel & Guestfarm belongs to the Basler family who are not related to the Hester Family, German hospitality is guaranteed and English and Afrikaans is spoken.

Your Hosts Björn and his wife Katja Basler are both born in Germany, Björn immigrated with his parents to Namibia in the early 70ties and Katja came to Namibia as a young Women in the beginning of the 90ties and stayed here ever since. Katja was awarded the best Hotelier award in 2011.

Hotel Helmeringhausen boasts a warm, cosy restaurant with exquisite meals and a refreshing swimming pool. Enjoy a cold beer or a glass of Cape Wine in our well-stocked fully licensed restaurant, whilst you catch up on all the local news or exchange travel information with fellow guests. There is also a cosy lounge with comfortable sofas and inviting fireplace. A hearty buffet breakfast, fresh farm produce for lunch and a three-course, set dinner menu are served in the restaurant.

After a long day's desert driving, many guests enjoy a dip in our crystal clear swimming pool. There is also an outdoor beer and coffee garden, set amongst the hotels lush garden. There are 22 well-appointed individual en-suite double rooms. Each room is fitted with mosquito nets and comfort. We also have a campsite for guests that love the outdoors and also a self-catering unit. Our Curio Shop makes for interesting browsing and is stocked with various locally hand- and homemade items.

Right next to the hotel is the Agricultural Museum of Helmeringhausen located, founded by the local Farmers' Association. It displays old interesting farming implements, such as water drilling machines and fire fighting coaches, used in the olden days.

Farm drives and a hiking trail are available in and around the premises. Helmeringhausen Hotel also has an airstrip (25°51'46.21"S, 16°49'4.48"E), with pre-arranged transfers to and from the hotel for their guests.

  • Cape to Cairo

Great stop over on a Cape to Cairo trip with a group. Nothing was too much trouble and the evening meal for a big group went down well. No pets allowed unless by prior arrangement. We would go back.
